Swahili for welcome, or come in. In my trips to Congo, I noticed an extreme value of hospitality. No matter how well you know the person, what time of day it is, or if you are otherwise engaged, when someone shows up on your doorstep you are expected to properly welcome them. Often this means inviting them in and offering them something to drink.
I showed up as an incompetent, linguistically mute, American stranger and people of grinding poverty treated me with a generosity that is out of my reach: I am far poorer than I think. In that spirit of hospitality, come in to our blog. I hope you feel welcome. The idea behind this blog is to complement our newsletter. We don’t want to abuse the trust that you have given us in subscribing to our newsletter. We realize that, as savvy children of the information age, you use email as a way to protect yourselves against needless information, so we will try to keep our newsletters short and to the point regarding our progress toward serving in the DRC. That being the case, we have put a lot of thought into taking this step in our lives. That’s where this blog comes in. It enables us to let whoever is interested peek behind the curtain into how we have processed this significant decision. Apart from God convincing us through his scripture, a number of resources have shaped our thinking. We hope to describe how in more depth than would be possible in the newsletter. We will place a link to every resource we interact with on our resources page. Unless otherwise stated, I, Wes will be writing this blog. The overarching theme of each post will be to address WHY, a question we have been asked on numerous occasions and ask ourselves regularly. |
No matter how hard you throw a dead fish in the water, it still won't swim.
